DEL VALLE VULTURE VENTURE

30/50-MILE ENDURANCE RIDE

and 15 mile Fun Ride

OCTOBER 14, 2006

Welcome to the fourth running of the Del Valle Vulture Venture.  Del Valle Regional Park is nestled in the hills south of Livermore, Ca.  We are excited to offer this ride for its variation in terrain and for the advantages this park has to offer families for a truly wonderful fall adventure.  Our trail offers the 50-mile rider a challenging ride and the limited distance rider a scenic and enjoyable trail.  For visiting family members, Del Valle offers excellent fishing, hiking, swimming, and boat rentals.   The surrounding area offers local wine tasting, golf courses, and shopping.

Camp:  Base Camp is at 750-ft elevation and is located at the Caballo Loco Horse camp, in a large field with ample parking.  No amenities or hookups.  Ample horse water is available, but no people water – please bring your own supply.  Camp will be open on Friday, October 13, 2006, at noon.  You are welcome to stay on until Sunday, but must pay for an additional night.

The Trail: As a rider you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Mount Diablo and the Pleasanton-Livermore Valley.  All loops offer riders and their horses a scenic trail along the Del Valle Lake to the dam and back with excellent footing.  This a challenging trail, so a well-conditioned horse is recommended.  Clipping is advisable if weather stays hot.

The Fun Ride!

Interested in Endurance Riding?

Want to try an easy 15-mile endurance ride that any fit trail horse can do?

On Saturday, October 14, 2006, the Del Valle Vulture Venture Endurance Ride will be hosting a 15‑mile fun ride that is designed for people who want to learn more about endurance riding and give it a try!

This ride is designed to be a non-competitive event that will operate exactly like a Limited Distance or traditional Endurance ride with a little NATRC (North American Trail Ride Conference) thrown in the mix.  Here’s what you will do!

  • Arrive Friday afternoon, set up camp, pick up your ride packet, and get your horse vetted in.  Ride management will visit your campsite to assist/or offer advise on your horse-camp setup.
  • Attend the ride meeting, and then attend the special new rider’s clinic designed to help answer all your questions.
  • Camp out Friday night with your horse and wake up early to catch the start of the 50-mile race (6:45am) and the 30-mile ride (7:15am) – the fun ride start will be similar.
  • Start out on the ride at 8:00 am and do the first marked loop back into base camp for your vet check and 1-hour hold.
  • Upon arriving at base camp, have your horse P&R (pulse & respiration) by capable volunteers.  Once your horse has passed the P&R your 1-hour hold begins.  You will proceed to the vet for approval to continue the ride.  If all is good, take your horse back to your trailer, loosen tack, remove the bit, and set your horse up with water and hay.
  • Come over to the cook shack for a nice lunch.
  • Allow at least the last 10 minutes of your 1-hour hold to tighten your girth, replace your headstall, check hoofs, go to the bathroom… (in other words, to get ready to leave again!!)
  • When your 1-hour is up, mount up and head to the timer-out to leave on the second  loop.
  • Finish the ride, pass the completion exam, and get your award!

We are looking for Complete Beginners!  The goal for this event is for a beginner, with absolutely no endurance experience, to come and learn about endurance riding, and to try a real event, in a nice, safe, local environment, that operates exactly like the real thing.  Any fit trail horse can do the event; the speed will be very moderate over an easy/moderate trail. (You and your horse could walk the entire ride and complete on time.)  There are no AERC miles or points associated with the ride, just the great experience of learning how Endurance rides work.

Ride Manager’s Warning!  This event is not a race.  You will be able to walk and trot the trails, just like the pace would be on your first endurance ride, but for safety’s sake, you cannot go fast.  (IE- no cantering or high speed trotting.)   If you do, we will pull you!
